FAQ's
What Makes A Lab-grown Diamond?
There are many names for conventional laboratory grown diamonds: 'man-made', 'created', 'above-ground'’ or 'synthetic'. They are created by replicating similar high-pressure, high-temperature conditions as mined diamonds. A selected diamond 'seed' experiences these conditions in a lab, crystallising into a rough lab-grown diamond after several weeks. The rough jewel is then cut and polished, resulting in a stone with the same chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds.
Are All Lab-grown Diamonds Created Equally?
No, they are not. Whilst a Skydiamond is technically also a lab-grown diamond, it leads a new wave in man-made diamond creation due to a first-of-its-kind, patent-pending production process, and end-to-end traceability. Skydiamonds are completely clean, created with raw materials exclusively from the sky; C02, Wind, sun and rain. The renewable energy is powered by our sister company Ecotricity, and this informs their carbon-negative status, setting them apart from other lab-grown diamonds in terms of composition, characteristics, and emissions footprint, creating incredibly beautiful stones ordained by nature.
What Is A Natural Diamond?
Diamonds, the toughest natural substance on Earth, originate from carbon through a naturally occurring underground process taking between one to three billion years. Formed at depths miles beneath the Earth's mantle, they are created under extreme conditions of high pressure and temperature. Following their creation, diamonds travel to the surface through molten rock and are mined and extracted. While natural diamonds are cherished for their beauty, the mining process does carry significant environmental and social impact, with often hard-to-monitor working conditions, leading to loss of habitat for wildlife, deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. That’s why we are now seeing a growth in popularity when it comes to man-made alternatives.
What Is Traceability In This Context?
Skydiamond traceability ensures a 100% transparent journey. All stones over 0.5 carats through the meticulous process of AnchorCert certification (see further below). Each diamond over 0.5cts is engraved with ‘SKYDIAMOND’ and a unique code, with an accompanying report and product breakdown. This code becomes an indelible and infinite link between a stone and its origins – We never want to be mistaken for a land-mined diamond.
What Is AnchorCert, And What Guarantee Does It Give?
AnchorCert is a best-in-class, UK-based gemmological laboratory conducting rigorous assessments and certifications for gemstones; the British equivalent to the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA). Their 360 degree process guarantees the gem has undergone thorough examination and testing by AnchorCert experts, to assure the diamond's authenticity, quality, and adherence to specified standards, instilling confidence in its value and characteristics.
Where On The Universal Diamond Grading System Does Skydiamond Sit?
We adhere to the industry’s leading recognised system of diamond quality, the 4Cs, which represent the universal grading system for all diamonds. The official, industry-standard colour grading scale as defined by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA). 80% of the Skydiamonds we create are between D Flawless and H VS2.
What are the 4 C's?
- Cut: This refers to how well a diamond is proportioned, its symmetry, and the quality of its facets. A well-cut diamond will reflect light well and sparkle brightly.
- Colour: Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less colour in a diamond, the higher its grade and value.
- Clarity: This measures the presence of internal flaws (inclusions) and external blemishes (blemishes) in a diamond. Clarity grades range from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions visible to the naked eye).
- Carat weight: Carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. One carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams. Generally, the higher the carat weight, the larger the diamond, and the more valuable it is, assuming all other factors are equal.

How Do I Choose The Right Carat Weight?
Choosing the right carat weight for a man-made diamond involves considering factors such as budget, personal preference, and the style of the jewellery. It's essential to determine your budget and decide how much you're willing to spend on the lab-grown diamond's size. Consider the size that appeals to you or the recipient, keeping in mind the type of jewellery and how the diamond will be worn. Additionally, factor in the wearer's hand size and the type of setting, as these can affect how the diamond appears. Balancing carat weight with other quality characteristics like cut, colour, and clarity is crucial for achieving the desired overall look.
How Should I Clean and Care For My Jewellery?
To clean and care for your lab-grown diamond jewellery, begin by soaking the piece in a solution of warm water and mild soap for about 20 to 30 minutes to loosen any dirt or residue. Gently scrub the jewellery with a soft-bristled toothbrush, paying attention to the areas around the lab-grown diamond where dirt can accumulate. Rinse the piece thoroughly under warm running water and pat it dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal settings or loosen the diamonds. Store your jewellery separately from other pieces to prevent scratching, ideally in a soft pouch or jewellery box with compartments to keep each piece safe. Regularly inspect your jewellery for loose settings or damage, and have it professionally cleaned and inspected by a jeweller at least once a year to maintain its sparkle and ensure its longevity.
