How do you explain what you do to your kids / grandchildren / parents (how many do you have if of note)?
That we make diamonds that are made from the excess of carbon atoms in the sky and that I have the wonderful job of making them into jewellery someone will adore and hopefully wear every day.
What’s the furthest / most exciting place you have travelled to?
I can’t decide between the Gili islands, an archipelago in Indonesia or the Iguazu waterfalls in Brazil - both natural paradises in their own way.
What does a diamond signify to you?
Wonder, intense beauty, permanence.
What makes you get up in the morning with a spring in your step?
Children
How do you spend your free time?
Mainly as per my previous answer, then what ever exercise I can squeeze in, fair-weather gardening and if I didn’t already do it as part of my job, drawing.
What is your role at Skydiamond, and what does a typical day look like for you?
I could just say every day is different but here we go;
Design first and foremost - which yes requires some serious daydreaming and research but then the reality is I need to make these dreams become a physical reality, so quite a lot of sourcing of the right suppliers for each piece and then the inevitable project management.
I often do bespoke projects where I meet individuals and we become a little bubble together creating the perfect piece for them. Such a joy.
Finally I would say design is also intrinsic to every department so I get to work with our wonderful engineers on the diamond innovations and cutting, with our incredible jewellery makers, through to marketing and branding on communicating our inspiration so all that energy from
the whole Skydiamond team sparks the magnetism we know our diamond jewellery deserves.
What do you love about working at Skydiamond?
The modern thinking and reinvention of such a traditional and unquestioned industry combined with the infinite and emotive legacy that only jewellery signifies.
Where do you see the future of lab-grown diamonds heading, and how is Skydiamond positioned to lead the way?
Well of course! We are on our own at the moment, the cherry on the cake, and aim to stay there and inspire others to join us. Lab isn’t going anywhere, all you need to do is look at the uptake, particularly amongst younger generations. The possibility for innovation means we will be able to keep evolving to capture not only carbon but imaginations.
What has been your most significant project or accomplishment at Skydiamond so far?
The Sky rocks was a really fun series of rings with some of our largest stones. Also a project just finished with vintage queen Bay Garnett. I like to combine styles and this was a hybrid of the domed bombe ring and a signet ring, encrusted with three bezel-set diamonds and a hand engraved serpent representing human reinvention and circularity. I just love all it represents and its sculptural nature.
