Choosing a lab-grown diamond
Four qualities decide how a stone looks and what it costs. Use the scales below to find the balance that suits you.
Carat:
Carat weight is the standard weight unit for gemstones. It is reported to two decimal places, with one carat equalling 1/5 gram.
Two diamonds of identical carat weight can appear noticeably different in size depending on their shape and cut.
Certified measurements are recorded to two decimal places, in millimetres.

Colour:
Diamond colour is graded on a D to Z colour range, with D as the top (Colourless) grade. As grades move through the alphabet to Z the colours range through Colourless, Near Colourless, Faint, Very Light and Light.
Fancy colour refers to any diamond with a colour outside of the D to Z colour range. It is used for yellow or brown diamonds that have more colour than a Z or one that exhibits a colour other than yellow, grey or brown.

Clarity:
Diamond clarity grades are based on the size, location, visibility and number of inclusions (internal or surface features) or blemishes (external features). Many are not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen using a 10x loupe.

Cut:
The cut of a diamond describes how well-balanced the proportions of a diamond are and how the facets are arranged to produce sparkle and brightness.
Diamond cut grades are only given to round brilliant cuts because they are the only cut that has standardised facets. All other shapes are given a Fancy cut grade.
