"Raising voices of planet-positive changemakers who are working towards a more brilliant tomorrow."
Introducing Nick Phillips
I am the Managing director of Britwind where we design and manufacture small wind turbines for households, community groups and small businesses. I work with a fantastic team who empower people and organisations to eliminate their reliance upon fossil fuels and gain energy independence.
How does Nature Inspire your work?
The natural world is full of interesting opposites. There is the perfect regularity of shapes such as honeycomb and the mathematical consistency of spirals on shells, yet there is also unpredictable turbulence in wind patterns and the meandering path of water down a hillside. Life can be similarly foreseeable or equally irregular. You can’t fight it so embrace it. Keep your options open; expect the expected but prepare for the unusual.
How do you keep motivated when it feels one step forward and two steps back?
I like to run. I enjoy all distances from parkruns to ultra-marathons. Aside from the health benefits, it gives me time to think and brings the opportunity to challenge myself physically and mentally. I see many parallels with the climate crisis we face today…no matter how far we’ve gone and how tired we are, the clock keeps ticking; if we want to achieve our goal, every second counts. When we stop pushing, we fall behind and its so much harder to catch up than it is to keep moving, so we must be relentless in our efforts and never stop making progress. Keep the big picture in sight and break it down into smaller targets; when you’ve achieved one, ask “what can I do next to bring me closer to my goal?”
What does a diamond represent to you?
A diamond is the ultimate symbol of luxury and eternity. It is something that has beauty through simplicity and purity. But it’s also a sign of technological triumph – now that we have found a way to make something so perfect, we have eliminated any reasonable justification for mining diamonds from the Earth.
What would you say to Mother Nature if you could shout it up to the Sky?
Sorry. But bear with us. We know what we’ve done and we’re working hard to fix it.
Who or What are you currently most encouraged by that will help us deliver a more brilliant tomorrow for people or planet?
Smart people. Whilst politicians argue, there are so many clever people just getting on with finding solutions.
