FAQs

What is a Quantum Diamond Sensor?

A diamond quantum sensor is an advanced measurement device that uses the quantum properties of specially engineered diamond to detect magnetic fields, temperature, electric fields, pressure and other physical and chemical parameters with exceptional sensitivity. These sensors contain atomic-scale defects (Nitrogen-Vacancy centres) within the diamond crystal that interact with their surroundings and can be controlled and read using light and microwaves. Changes in the local environment alter the quantum state of these defects, enabling highly accurate measurements. Because diamond is chemically stable, biocompatible and able to operate at room temperature, diamond quantum sensors are suitable for scientific, medical and industrial applications.

Why Are Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) Centres Important in Quantum Sensing?

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres are atomic-scale defects in diamond that enable highly sensitive quantum measurements. An NV centre forms when one carbon atom in the diamond lattice is replaced by a nitrogen atom and an adjacent carbon atom is missing, creating a vacancy. Together, the nitrogen atom and vacancy create a stable quantum system whose properties can be manipulated and measured using light and microwaves. When illuminated with green light, the NV centre emits red fluorescence that changes in response to magnetic fields, temperature, strain and electric fields. This combination of sensitivity, robustness and room-temperature operation makes NV centres exceptionally valuable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Why Are Advanced Materials Made in the UK Relevant Nowadays?

Advanced materials are essential for many modern technologies, including healthcare devices, energy systems, aerospace equipment, defence platforms, electronics and quantum technologies. Their properties often determine the performance, efficiency and reliability of next-generation products.

The UK has internationally recognised expertise in materials science, advanced manufacturing and commercialisation, supported by strong universities, research organisations and innovative companies. This ecosystem enables the development of high-value materials such as advanced semiconductors, engineered materials, functional coatings and quantum-grade diamond. By manufacturing advanced materials domestically, the UK can strengthen supply chains, create skilled jobs and support long-term economic growth.

Are Skydiamond NV quantum diamonds made in the UK?

Yes. Every Skydiamond quantum-grade diamond is grown entirely in the UK using renewable energy and a process guided by our sustainability priorities, offering a fundamentally different approach to producing advanced diamond materials.

That makes our supply secure. Quantum sensing is becoming critical to defence, navigation, healthcare and energy, so the materials behind it need a supply chain that geopolitical disruption, export controls or shipping shocks can’t cut off. Most synthetic diamond comes from a small number of overseas producers. Skydiamond gives UK and allied customers a sovereign, traceable source of quantum-grade diamond, with production fully under domestic control.
